Quant Equities Investing

With: Sarasin Bank
User need: Most asset management portfolios were run via a wine and dine method, where a company would ask for investment over lunch. We wanted a data driven method to make stock investment choices.
Challenges: We had a system that took 3 days to run, was inaccurate and could only manage 80 stocks.
Process: Create a information system that could download and manage 100 million pieces of data, and run a billion calculations.
Outcome: We won first prize in Geneva for outperformance, and used our hard won knowledge to start a company.

Market Simulations

With: Eniso Partners
User need: Our quant factor system was successful, but it was a grab bag of all sorts of methodologies. In order to test different portfolio strategies and variations we need to create a “digital twin” of the market.
Challenges: Convincing the CEO that investment was needed when the system was performing well.
Process: Primarily technical, we ran our quant system once a week, from which we would be given directions to buy, sell or rebalance. The system took 6 hours to run, we needed to get a version of it to run once per second, and on an 8 core machine, 8 times a second in order to test the millions of potential variations.
Outcome: Customised investment strategies for different jurisdictions.
